Spiritual Growth Matters

Evangelist Steve Livingston

The Christian life is to be one of giving, of making disciples, and of sharing the Gospel. It is allowing the gospel to capture us that we grow, so that we handle the deep issues of life (trials) and pass the knowledge on to others. This is a collection of articles and sermon notes designed to help our readers learn more about God and to have a deeper walk with Him.

About the Author: Steve Livingston- Evangelist, was born and raised just outside of Chicago Il. where he spent most of his childhood. At age 18 he left to serve in the US Navy for 5 years. After a few years struggling from addictions he picked up as a teen he was able to break those strongholds during a revival service at a nearby baptist church and gloriously saved and pulled from the miry clay. Since then he has served in ministry as a wide range of areas from layman, a Missionary pastor, to now as a Missionary Evangelist reaching America with the Gospel.

Hebrews 12:1-2 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross despising the shame and is set down at the right hand of the father.

When it comes to running our race i.e... living the Christian life, there are basically three simple principles that we should always consider.

First - Those who have gone on before us

If somebody else was able to overcome past indiscretions or the attacks of the enemy, then beloved so can you. Paul the apostle told the church at Corinth I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; the more I abundantly love you, the less I be loved.

The best advice I ever received when I heeded Gods call into the ministry was that I should expect my heart to be broken. Often our spiritual gains come through pain, hurt, struggle, confusion and disappointment.

Just because you and I are products of our past, doesn’t mean we need to be a prisoner to it. You aren’t the first person who has failed God at some point in their life.

Abraham lied about his wife being his sister

Moses was a murderer and tried to make excuses to not accept Gods call

David was an adulterer, murderer and horrible father

Solomon had concubines which led him astray

Peter denied Christ

Mark left Paul on the mission field

Paul the Apostle killed Christians before his conversion

No matter which way we twist it, the race is rough and it lasts for our lifetime. Proverbs 24:16 The just man falleth seven times, yet riseth up again. Remember the testimonies and the faith of those who have run the race before you. Life isn’t over until you draw your last breath.

Second - We need to see how the race affects us

As I mentioned previously, the race is for our lifetime, but if you’re not careful, you’ll focus more on the training than on the actual race. A good start at doing this is to simply get your priorities right. Joshua 1:8-This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

We will never see the complete sufficiency of Christ until we begin to see how insufficient we are compared to Christ. We couldn’t atone for our sins. In fact, the only thing we did to ever earn merit towards our salvation is the sin which put Christ on the cross.

True success isn’t about becoming great in the sight of man or according to the worlds philosophy. True, life changing and lasting success is about not failing the grace and will of God. If we are to live a life dedicated to God and consumed by God, we need to be consumed with the Book which was written by Him!!!

Thirdly- we should always consider what Christ has done for us.

John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, kill, and destroy. I am come that they might have life and have it more abundantly. Christ was born of a virgin-fully man yet fully God- lived 33 sinless years on this earth and died on the cross for our sins, forsaken by His Father only to have mankind reject him.

And as believers, we are called to live a life that is worthy of His death, an abundant spirit filled life. When is the last time you asked yourself, “is this life I’m living worth Christ dying for?” If we are honest, an overwhelming majority of us world say no, it isn’t.

Our opinions about the race don’t matter. The work of God done in accordance with the Word of God, in the Will of God empowered by the Spirit of God must never be sacrificed on the altar of personal experience or opinion.

As we look deeper into Hebrews 12:1 we see two distinct items which hinder the life of the believer…. weights and snares.

Weight issues come up in our life when God is drawing you into a more intimate life with Him, but there are some things you simply are have a hard time letting go of. They may necessarily not be sinful, but they are hindering you for being effective for the cause of Christ.

Sin issues are black and white and we can’t get around them at all. If Gods against it, so are we. It’s not about will power either. It’s about obedience to God and His Word. James 4:7-8 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts.

The closer we draw to God, the easier it is to run the race.

Yet every single attack the enemy brings upon us is to get our eyes off Christ and the path that is set before us. If Satan can get you focused on the weights and snares, you’ll be more concerned about yourself and not the things of God. Focusing on the weights and snares is one of the ways we end up paying more attention to the training and not the race. We run a race to win.

Lets look again at John 10:10. I want to show you briefly how satan gets us to take our eyes of Christ.

First, we notice how the thief steals. Why does somebody steal? To take something of value. To take something that is profitable to the owner or person who has steward of it. In our lives as believers satan desire’s to steal those things which have an eternal significance for us. He will do everything he can in his power to keep you from winning the lost.

Many of us today are too focused on our life falling apart due to our lack of a walk with God, that we are powerless in our battle to reach the lost. We claim salvation, but there is no evidence of it in our lives. A lack of fruit and spiritual power is evident, and we lack the fruit of the Spirit as well.

The ground you’ve given satan has allowed him to steal any opportunity you have at doing something for God.

Not only does the thief steal, but he also kills. Now a lot of our own personal lifestyle choices do kill the body and we can blame the influence of the enemy on our lives for part of it. Yet, more often than not satan will get you to commit spiritual suicide.

Any believer who persistently and consistently yields to a besetting sin soon discovers that they are unable to confess it and turn away from it. Soon, that believer will find themselves unwilling to give it up. Roman 1:28-32And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge,, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness, full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity,; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boaster, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenant-breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: who knowing the judgement of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death,, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Now I’m not saying that when you are unwilling to forsake your sin and repent that you’ve lost your salvation. I can easily prove that once your saved, your always saved. I am saying that either you made a false profession of faith in Christ, or that you’ve lost your spiritual common sense.

Every fresh act of sin in the life of the believer lessens our fear and remorse, hardens our hearts, and increases our evil inclinations. - yet the Bible speaks very plainly in 1 John 1:9: Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him, because he is born of God.

Thirdly the thief comes to destroy that which you hold most dear, the relationships with those you love most.

We often tend to neglect, reject and grow bitter towards those we think have wronged us, especially those in our own family as well as those within the church. Could you answer these questions for me.

How’s your family relationships and marriage doing?

How do you get along with fellow believers?

How’s your relationship with your pastor and church staff?

How’s your relationship with Christ?

Most folks desire to pass on over to glory with friends and family by their bedside singing praises to God and rejoicing over the life they have lived. Yet many of us will go to our grave having never forgiven others, ourselves or asked for forgiveness from those we have wronged.

Every fiery dart of the enemy if put into its proper place, can be used to purify the lives and hearts of the believer by God as a refining fire. Yet far too often we use the fire as a means to escape, not run to rescue others whom are perishing.

There is a reason why a Christian is weighted down and giving into a besetting sin… its all just a matter of choice.

If you sow to the flesh, you reap garbage in your life. If you sow spiritual fruit in your life, you’ll soon find yourself living the abundant life. It’s all simply a matter of choice. Do you want to run to win or simply remain in the gym training? Your choice.

Five keys to living the Victorious Christian life

Everybody today is looking for answers on how to live the victorious life. However as I often say we look everywhere except the Word of God. Man may have some of the answers most of the time, but God has all the answers all the time. I have used this list in my own personal walk with God and I have seen God do mighty things in just a short period of time.

1) Genuine Heartfelt Repentance

I believe that every believer ought to study and gleam the precious jewels that comprise Psalm 51.This psalm, known as the penitents psalm beautifully demonstrates David’s own personal acceptance of his actions after being confronted by Nathan the prophet after David’s wicked and adulterous affair with Bathsheba. One of the biggest problems we have in churches all across America today is that we don’t see sin as it really is, a digression of the law. We far too often label it is a mistake or it as a problem, not a complete rebellion against God. Is the remorse we feel because we have dishonored a thrice Holy and almighty God, or simply because we got caught and now feel guilty?

2) Reclaim Surrendered Ground.

Ephesians 4:27 Neither give place to the devil. The word used in the greek text for place is Topos…it is where we get the root of the word topography or ground. What in your life have you given over to the enemy? Media, movies, music, personal alone time with God, personal standards and convictions, and family devotions are just a few places where we as believers tend to ignore the slight workings of the enemy. Soon however he uses whatever we have given to form an all out attack. To reclaim surrendered ground, simply refuse to allow satan access to whatever it is you have given him. Go to God in prayer, confess it, repent from it, put on the armor of God and begin walking in victory and stop living in defeat.

3) c

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

A stronghold is usually a false belief system built upon the foundation of something that happened in our past. These strongholds are used by the enemy to launch an attack against us, and they are also a barrier which keeps the Lord from having complete access to our life.

A strong hold is a place in your life that the devil uses to attack you from. Many times this walled city can be traced to an event where we were harmed or wronged by an individual we trusted. The key thought or principle to remember when tearing down strongholds is that if God can forgive them, so must we.

4) Build your life upon the Word of God

It sounds simple enough but many believers simply do not live by the book. John 8:32- Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. The Bible is Gods precious and holy word, it is His God breathed book. The same quickening spirit God breathed into Adam, He used to breathe out His Word. As a believer we ought not to simply read God’s Word, but rely upon it to change and mold our lives into the image of what He would have us to be. Below I have listed a few verses of scripture you may want to memorize.

Romans 12:1-2

Psalm 119:9-16

Hebrews 4:12

2 Timothy4:13

Joshua 1:8

5) Take every thought Captive

The Christian thought life is to be centered around the things of God. Philippians 4:8 Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if the were be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

To saturate your life with things of God, you must saturate your mind with the things of Christ. I created a little acrostic below to help you remember just how important your thought life is.

TFAR

T- Thoughts always lead to feelings

F - Feelings always lead to actions

A - Actions always lead to results.

R - Results: If you want better results in the Christian life, saturate your thought life with the things of God!!!

Sin of Pride

No other sin is as closely related to the work of the enemy as the sin of pride. In fact we see it in the fall of Satan as set forth in the Word of God. Isaiah 14:12-14 How art thou fallen from Heaven, O Lucifer, Son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground which did weakest the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God, I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be the like the most High.

All pride stems from our heart and causes us to become the Gods of our own lives. When pride creeps into our heart, we desire to become like God, yet in control of our life….not in His supreme character.

Every instance of pride falls into one of four categories.

1.When I begin to assume responsibilities and character traits which belong to God.

2.Looking to someone or something to fulfill the needs that only God can give.

3.Holding onto things which rightly belong to God

4.Neglecting or rejecting to do what God has rightly told me to do.

  1. I fall into pride when I begin to assume responsibilities which ultimately belong to God.

No believer is self sufficient. If you could of saved yourself, there would be no need for a Savior. The attributes of God are what separate Him from us. His perfect holiness and righteousness allow Him to be not only sovereign over our life, but He alone is the one we are to subscribe all glory to.

Yet in our moments of weakness and within the desires of our flesh, our sinful pride likes to take over aspects of life that belong to God.

God is our Protector-Jehovah Nissi-The Lord is our banner. He alone gives us the victory, so why should we desire not to be under His mighty arm, and lead by Him into battle? Exodus 17:15

God is the Judge- We as believers are called to be consumed with compassion and doing all we can to reach the lost within our families and communities. However this is hindered when we become not only the judge of their salvation experience or whether or not they deserve salvation. It is also not our responsibility to openly, or secretly judge those who are either away from God, or not living up to our salvation experience and testimony. Isaiah 33:22, Acts 10:42

God is our Provider -Jehovah Jireh-The name means “the God who provides.” Just as He provided yesterday, He will provide for today and tomorrow. Genesis 22:9-14

God is Sovereign- God is in complete control of creation, and our lives. It is by this attribute that we know that God must be all knowing and all powerful.1 Chronicles 29:11-13

God is our Counselor- All of Gods acts toward and direction given to believers, are done in perfect and infinite wisdom. He always acts for our good, which is to conform us to the image of Christ. Proverbs 3:19-20

Have you allowed God to be:

Provider

Protector

Judge

Savior

Counsellor

Sustainer

Guide

2. The second manifestation of pride in my life, is when I purposefully make the decision to look towards someone or something to fulfill the needs only which God can supply.

If you attending a church today, or serving God because you want a better life, or a better outlook, or to become a better version of yourself….that’s not service or worship, that is idolatry. We serve and worship Him because He alone is worthy of all honour, glory, and praise.

Many of us seek for value, worth and acceptance in every area of our lives from friends, acquaintances, and peers. However a believer must first recognize where our worth, value and acceptance comes from. Ephesians 5:19-23 And what is the exceeding greatness of His power to usward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead and set him at his own right hand in heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also that which is to come: And hath put all things under His feet, and gave him tombe the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all.

No amount of accolades or entourage can ever bring you value, esteem or worth. As believers, we place our value not upon what we own, but upon our position in Christ. We are more than conquerors through Christ, and His provision and direction should be enough for us. Phillipians 4:11-12 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased. And I know how to abound: everywhere and In all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

I want to make one fast statement concerning contentment in the life of a believer. As Christians our job is to magnify Christ in all that we do. We are to be content in what we receive regarding provision for living, yet we should never be content concerning what it is we are accomplishing for the work of the Lord. We can always do more. I do not think we will get to heaven and Christ will tell us we took serving Him to serious.

Her are just a few verses of scripture to remind us of our need to come to God alone for God to provide for us.

Jeremiah 33:3-Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things which thou knowest not.

Matthew 6:3- But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness: and all these things shall be added unto you

Phillipians 4:19-But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus

Psalms 37:25-I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

Who or what have you allowed to provide for you in your life?

Worth, acceptance, and value

Salvation

Sanctification

Security

Healing

Provision

Protection

Help

Peace

3. The third manifestation of pride in my life is when I make a deliberate decision to hold onto things that belong to God

Far too many of us have been taught that the Christian life is based upon what church we attend, who we fellowship with, and what many may call churchianity. Yet the Christian life is supposed to be based upon followship, who we follow has a far greater impact on our lives than what we follow.

Luke 9:23-24 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

Following Christ will cost you everything that you have been programmed by the worlds philosophy to hang onto. Our treasures and home are not of this world, so why then should we cling to them? We need to become focused on living the life that Christ wants for us.

Many of us are focused on three areas of our life. They are what we desire to be, do and have. Yet if our goals, dreams, desires, life and time are not based upon what God deems is best for me, then we simply fail the grace that God has bestowed upon us.

Galatians 2:20-I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son Of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Collosians 3:2-Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

A quick and easy way to see where your affections and desires are , is to look at your calendar and checkbook and see who or what gets most of your time and finances. We spend money and time on those things we follow after.

resisting evil

Have you resisted giving God?

Possessions

Friends

Families

Future plans

Music and media

Ministry goals

Emotions

Health and welfare

4. The fourth manifestation of pride in my life is when I deliberately neglect and reject to do that which God has called me to do.

The key to living the successful and fruitful Christian life can easily be summed up in three simple words…submission, humility, and obedience. Yet you can’t be any obedient without first being submissive and humble. The same goes for any combination of those three words. However, we often choose to do what we deem is Gods will for our life without first discerning what God really wants for us, or seeking wise council.

Proverbs 14:12-There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

James 4:6-10 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Can you be willing to be made willing? And if so can you be willing to simply answer Gods call for your life?

Have you rejected?

Christs death on the cross

Denial of self

Forgiving others regardless of how you were wronged

Embracing suffering
